Francesco Cavalli, original name Pier Francesco Caletti-Bruni (born Feb. 14, 1602, Crema, Republic of Venice [Italy]—died Jan. 14, 1676, Venice), the most important Italian composer of opera in the mid-17th century.

  The son of Gian Battista Caletti-Bruni, he assumed the name of his Venetian patron Federico Cavalli. In December 1616 he became a singer in the choir of St. Mark’s, Venice, under Claudio Monteverdi, whose opera Orfeo established opera as a permanent genre. Cavalli subsequently held various posts there, becoming maestro di cappella in 1668. During his lifetime he exercised a considerable influence on European taste.

Didone (1641) is perhaps his most interesting work, but it was his Egisto, given in Paris in 1646, that initiated the rivalry between French and Italian styles. As a dramatic composer Cavalli wrote for a small string orchestra, and his operas require no trained chorus. He wrote few concerted numbers for soloists, but his works have signs of the beginnings of the formal recitative-aria technique, sometimes even with a da capo section. Compensation for the level character of his operatic music was provided by the brilliant costumes and lavish sets, without which, in spite of their dramatic power and grotesque humour, Cavalli’s works are incomplete.

Although performed throughout Italy, these dramma per musica were generally written especially for the public opera houses that flourished in 17th-century Venice.
 
 
Twenty-seven of his 42 operas are preserved in manuscript in the library of St. Mark’s, and renewed interest in Cavalli has resulted in numerous revivals, recordings, and publications of his operas. Erismena and L’Ormindo have been recorded, and various others have been excerpted and recorded.

Cavalli: "Ercole amante"
 

Ercole amante (Hercules in Love, French: Hercule amoureux) is an opera in a prologue and five acts by Francesco Cavalli. The Italian libretto was by Francesco Buti, based on Sophocles' The Trachiniae and on the ninth book of Ovid's Metamorphoses. It was first performed on 7 February 1662 in Paris at the Salle des Machines in the Tuilleries.

 
Background
The opera was a commission from Cardinal Mazarin to celebrate the wedding of Louis XIV and Maria Theresa of Spain. However, the grand preparations for the production resulted in delays and the opera was presented two years later.
To cater to French taste eighteen ballet entrées and intermèdes with music by Isaac de Benserade and Jean-Baptiste Lully were inserted, mostly at the ends of acts. These were not merely diversions, but also served to further the plot.

Performance history
After its premiere the opera was given another seven times: 14 and 18 February; 18, 22, 25, and 29 April; and 6 May. The theatre was built specifically to present the opera, and if the construction costs of the theatre are included, it was the most expensive of the French court's theatrical productions mounted up to that point.

Xerse
 

Xerse is an opera by Cavalli Francesco - specifically, a dramma per musica about Xerxes I.

 
The libretto was written by Nicolò Minato, and was later set by both Giovanni Bononcini and George Frideric Handel. Minato's plot outline is loosely based on Book 7 of Herodotus's Histories. The opera, consisting of a prologue and three acts, was first performed at Venice on the 12 January of 1654, at the Teatro SS Giovanni e Paolo.

The opera was highly popular in Italy, not least due to Cavalli's setting of "Ombra mai fù" (later more famously set by Handel): 9 different revivals were given across Italy while Cavalli lived. In 1660 Cavalli was persuaded to travel to France to produce a new opera for the wedding of Louis XIV in Paris. Unfortunately for the composer, he soon became entangled in court intrigue which ensured that the projected opera, Ercole amante, was not ready in time and had to be replaced by a revival of Xerse at the last minute. Xerse was given with ballets by Cavalli's rival Jean-Baptiste Lully, a Florentine who had become the official court composer in France. The whole spectacle lasted eight or nine hours and the French audience had little appreciation for an opera in a foreign language, preferring Lully's dance music.
